How do you know if a plant gets too much or too little water?
We have a Benjamin fig tree. It sits in a self-watering pot with a broken water level indicator. Some leaves have started yellowing. I have watered it about once a week during winter and perhaps two liters each time. How can I know if the yellow leaves are due to over-watering or under-watering?

I think is is overwatering, is the soil moist? It should be dry on top, but moist if you stick about half of your finger in it. If it were under watered it would be dropping it’s leaves and they would be dry.

Another likely factor is that the humidity levels are low, yellow leaves are a sign of stress. If the soil feels okay, try misting your plant with water once a week. The winter time lowers humidity levels to about 20-30% in homes whereas most houseplants do better in 40-60%.

The soil is too hard for me to stick half a finger in it. The pot is quite big. 30 x 30 centimeters measured from the soil down.
