How to make an expensive-pendant-lamp-knock-off

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

My wife and I have been searching for a pendant lamp for one of our hallways. When we found one we both thought was (barely) acceptable it cost more than we were willing to pay. Instead I decided to make a copy of it.

These are the things you need:

  • A cord set like IKEA Sekond

  • Pencil or marker pen

  • Carpet knife or other knife

  • Translucent plastic can, at least 10 litre

This is how you make the lamp:

  1. Decide which way of the plastic can you want to be up and down. Draw a circle in the middle of the side you want to be up. Make the diameter the same as the outside diameter of the lamp socket of the cord set. Cut a hole inside the circle.

  2. Draw another circle, this time in the middle of the downside of the plastic can. Make the diameter the size of your fist or larger. This hole is for assembling the lamp, letting air in to cool the lamp and for letting undiffused light shine down. Cut out the hole.

  3. Assemble the can and the cord set. If you use the IKEA Sekond there is a plastic ring to mount a shade. Unscrew that and put the light socket into the top hole of the plastic can. Put the ring back to secure the cord set in the can.

Your fancy pendant lamp is finished. I made ours in five minutes. Mount a light bulb to try it out. I used a LED light bulb with less than 10 watt. It’s important that the bulb doesn’t get to hot since the plastic can won’t be able to withstand too much heat.

This is the end result:

No, this isn’t meant as a permanent solution. We will replace the lamp eventually when we find the perfect one, but until then… :-)

Very creative! How long did this take to complete? and how much money do you reckon you saved by doing it? 🙂

Even at full brightness the LED lamps doesn’t get much warmer than 40 degrees so a plastic bottle is in no risk of melting.
