How to make a disaster supplies kit

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

Every home should be prepared for disaster. Power outage and natural disasters can happen anywhere. Many governments recommend that citizens are prepared to survive for three days on their own.

How do you prepare for three days without outside Help? Think of what you typically use over the course of three days. Which of those things are necessary? That’s what you should put in you emergency kit.

The U.S. government has thought a bit about this and prepared a list of things they think could be included in you prepper arsenal. These are the basics:

  • Water, 4 liter per person per day.

  • Food that is non-perishable.

  • Radio that doesn’t depend on outside power.

  • Flashlight with extra batteries.

  • First aid kit.

  • Whistle to signal for Help.

  • Dust mask, plastic sheeting and duct tape to “shelter in place”.

  • Toilet paper, garbage bags and moist towelettes.

  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.

  • Manual can opener.

  • Local maps.

  • Cell phone with chargers and backup battery.

I would add things to keep you distracted and entertained. Reading and games for instance.

Read more at ready.gov and don’t forget to watch the list of additional emergency supplies.
