By joining forces with a family member or friend, you can take care of both your backup needs at the same time.
The idea is that you backup your important files, like photos, videos and documents, on each other's computers. Your friends backup is on your computer and yours is backed up on his or hers.
This is how you can do it:
- Install Resilio Sync (free for personal use) on your Mac and have a sibling, parent or friend do the same.
- Then each of you share a folder with the other and put everything you want to backup there. That way both you and your friend will have a copy of the files on your computers at different locations.
- (If you want to back up your iPad or iPhone photo album, you can install Resilio Sync for iOS (also free) and copy photos and videos to the same backup folder on your computer.)
Sync works continuously. When a file is added, changed or removed, the change will immediately be synced to all devices that are online.
If you also backup your own computers to an external medium, like an external hard drive or a USB stick, there will be four copies of every file in at least two locations. That is usually enough to feel pretty confident.
Resilio Sync is fast so it's no problem to sync between computers on different sides of the globe. The important thing is that they are online at the same time at least once a day so they can sync with each other. If they are always online it's even better.
