If your tap water is "hard" you may get stains in kettles. This is hard to remove if you don't know how.

Calcium can be removed with acid. Mix equal parts water and household vinegar in the kettle and let it soak for an hour or two. Then replace it with clean water and boil the kettle for a while. Rinse the kettle in cold water to get rid of the calcium.
